Festival to bring diverse films to Vaughan area

The Toronto version of the Reel Abilities Film Festival will be holding its sixth edition virtually this May, presenting an assortment of films from deaf and disabled perspectives.

The festival displays feature and short films from around the world, selected by a jury, which relate to people with disabilities and their cultures, presenting them to an audience from Toronto and nearby areas like Vaughan.

Previous films featured have included Seeing the Unseen, an Icelandic documentary about women with autism, the Serbian narrative feature The Witch Hunters, which is about an imaginative child with cerebral palsy, and Code of the Freaks, which looks at how people with disabilities have been represented in Hollywood. This year’s slate will be announced in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Reel Abilities also aims to present films in an accessible way, and the virtual streaming format will help include those who may be left out by a conventional cinema. The festival is the first international chapter of Reel Abilities, a group of festivals founded in the United States that now operates in 20 cities.

The Toronto festival has also grown to include screenings and talks throughout the year, with a focus towards disabilities. Events like these are often promoted through means like flyer printing and online video streaming.

The sixth edition of the Toronto Reel Abilities Film Festival will take place between May 19 and 31 online.
