Event to bring Indian festival to Vaughan
Ente Canada will be staging Onachantha this September, bringing the Kerala tradition of Onam to Vaughan.
Onam is a traditional harvest festival in the Kerala region of India. It is not tied to religion and is celebrated by the Malayali community around the world. The Vaughan version will be a “Kerala carnival” featuring modified versions of traditional games and activities. There will be food stalls offering traditional Onam food like the Onasadya feast and Payasam Mela porridge, as well as vendors offering gift items, clothing, jewellery and more. Vendors at festivals like this often offer special sales and promotional products to help connect with new customers.
There will be a full day of cultural performances, showcasing music, dance styles, fashion styles and more from Kerala and other parts of India. There will also be games and draws for special prizes. For young visitors there will be a kids play area with carnival rides and games. This will be the fourth edition of Onachantha held in Vaughan by Ente Canada and local radio station AAHA 91.9 FM. Decor will draw on traditional Onam colours and decoration with modern twists, with visitors encouraged to dress up for the occasion.
The 2024 edition of Onachantha will take place on September 7 at the Woodbridge Fair Grounds in Vaughan. Entry and nearby parking are free to the public.
