Chinese New Year celebrated in Vaughan
The citizens of Vaughn and the surrounding area recently gathered to usher in the Chinese New Year.
The City of Vaughn and the Federation of Chinese Canadians in the York Region joined together to celebrate one of the most important holidays in the traditional Chinese calendar. The event was very well attended and attracted the area’s residents, community groups, businesses, and dignitaries.
Consisting of 12 animal signs, the Chinese zodiac marks this coming year as the Year of the Snake, which symbolizes care and attention to detail as well as steady progress towards one’s goals. The Chinese calendar is lunar based, and the New Year is a time to move past old concerns and towards new and brighter horizons.
A traditional lion dance and eye dotting ceremony marked the opening of this year’s celebrations. There were also performances of Chinese opera, traditional Chinese dance and music, a performance by Shaolin monks and samples of traditional foods and art.
As with any Chinese New Year celebration, the Goddess of Fortune played a prominent role, as she symbolizes prosperity through the upcoming year.
This is the third time that the Chinese New Year has been celebrated at Vaughn City Hall, and the event continues to grow larger and attract more community participation.
The event not only celebrates the New Year, it also provides community groups and businesses in the area, such as restaurants, printing services, and retail stores, a chance to showcase their services. Flyer printing can be an excellent way for the community to learn more about traditional Chinese culture.
