The York region United Way kicked off its yearly fundraising campaign last month, when it held its annual building industry luncheon.
A large and colorful sign, which had been created by a local banner printing company, welcomed the guests, and over 1,200 developers, builders, and local politicians attended the event. Together they raised more than $1.2 million, which will be used to support many programs and services throughout the community
The celebration also honored the legacy of Alfredo De Gasperis, who first founded the luncheon in 1982. He realized that the building industry had a responsibility that went beyond simply constructing the physical elements of a neighborhood, and that so much more could be done to make the York region a great place to live.
The funds raised will be used to support the United Way’s three main target areas, which are to build strong communities, support youth, and to help families and individuals break the cycle of poverty. There are many different programs which help to achieve these goals.
In the last year alone, the group helped over 28,000 young people access mental health services as well as after-school programs and counseling, they assisted at least 5,000 families in escaping the heavy burden of poverty and ensured that over 40,000 people could have easier access to social services.
The high levels of financial support shows just how much good work businesses, private individuals and politicians can accomplish when they come together for the good of their shared community.
