Stoney Creek more than a trickle in Greater Hamilton area
In the entire history of the province of Ontario, little wee Stoney Creek, a municipality swallowed up by the City of Hamilton in 2001, has been in the thick of some important historical moments.
Brochure printers in Stoney Creek will attest to its rich, celebrated history as they continue to roll off information for tourists who visit every year.
Stoney Creek was the site of a fierce battle during the magnificent War of 1812 and its claim to fame is that of being the Canadian location where the Americans infiltrated our country the deepest. Yet, the peaceful village was home to pioneers long before the Americans came to argue with the Canadians.
The first settlers of European descent, mostly comprised of United Empire Loyalists, first laid claim to land in the Stoney Creek area as early as 1786. Sections of the locally infamous Gage House, located in the Battle of Stoney Creek Historic Site, date back to 1796.
While the precise origin of its name is not known, one thing is clear. It is spelled “Stoney” and not “Stony” and may be related to a surname as opposed to a creek with a rocky bottom located nearby.
After experiencing modest growth throughout history, and transferring into the governance of several different municipalities, Stoney Creek became a city in 1984.
Even after amalgamation with the City of Hamilton was completed in 2001, Stoney Creek has managed to maintain its character, its historic personality which keeps print services and brochure printers knee deep in tourist literature.
