While Stoney Creek has beautiful outdoor parks and recreation areas, its residents are about to have access to a new park on the east mountain.
The Hamilton Conservation Authority purchased 71.4 hectares of land that is part of the Greenbelt protected by the government. The city originally wanted this land, which stretches between the Dofasco Trail and Green Mountain Road, to be zoned for future housing.
In fact, according to Chris Firth-Eagland, chief administrative officer, this plot of land is the first of several planned purchases. The goal is to create a mix of natural environments and ink them into the existing Devil’s Punch Bowl by the Dofasco Trail.
There is much work to be done to finalize the deal and create passive recreation areas throughout them, including trails. However, once this work is complete, there will likely be an opening celebration to which residents will be invited to join in the festivities and enjoy outdoor fun. Promotional pamphlets and Brochures may be handed out to notify the public of the event.
Planned work includes creating more access trails along the land so it is more accessible for the public. The park will also need an official name. It’s possible that Hamilton schools will participate in a naming contest, but precise plans have not yet been announced.
