Report calls for more skate parks
A new study has recommended Stoney Creek, Hamilton and surrounding cities install more skateboarding facilities in public parks.
The popularity of the sport has grown exponentially in the past 10 years, with plenty of approval from parents and members of the community. The study noted that skateboarding offers young people a much needed break from handheld devices, and delivers a healthy form of exercise.
The new report recommends that nine local area parks, including Valley Park in Stoney Creek, have new infrastructure installed by 2031. The study noted that these facilities may be enjoyed by BMX bikers and in-line skaters as well.
Feedback was gathered for the report from multiple community meetings, as well as surveys specifically designed to evaluate the recreation facilities provided in the region. Telephone surveyors and direct mail printing services may have been used to gather the reported public opinions.
While designs are being created and plans are moving forward, funding may delay some of the projects for two or three years. An average skate park facility can cost as much as $520,000. Local city councillors must also find money in the budget for other important park upgrades, like splash pads.
The report further stated that the region needs to focus on maintenance at some of the existing skate parks. As one of the first parks established in North America, the much loved Beasley Street Park in Hamilton could be first on the list.
