When the days of December turn cold, a group of St. Catharine’s bakers will be staying warm and cozy while they participate in a pie baking workshop.
The students in the class will find out how easy it can be to make a decorative pie. They will each prepare one that they can bake or freeze at home, and the crust will have a special secret ingredient.
The pastry crust prepared during the session will contain a sourdough starter, and the learners will discover the basics of working with this form of dough. They will also do some taste testing of different crusts made using a variety of fats, and whenever possible, the class will be working with ingredients that were sourced from local farms.
While the group works on their pastry creations, they will be welcome to chat and enjoy each other’s company. Light refreshments, along with tea and coffee will be served, and each participant will be going home with a pie as well as a recipe book and their own small jar filled with sourdough starter. A printing services company will be able to prepare recipe Booklets for this sort of occasion, which can make it easy for the class members to try making them at home.
This event is scheduled to be held in a private event space at Bolete, and tickets can be purchased for $75. The workshop has been planned for the afternoon of December 8.
