The Canadian Tulip Festival is returning to Ottawa for 12 days next month
The main attraction of the festival is always the thousands of tulips in bloom that appear to take over the entire city. The story behind the tulips is that Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her family took refuge in Canada during World War II. To thank the country, once she became queen in 1948 she gifted the country with 100,000 tulip bulbs and sent them every year until 1980. The festival began in 1953.
The festival has many different events taking place at various venues in the city. The Tulip Ball, which takes place at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier on May 13, is hosted by the Mozaika Cultural and Philanthropic Association. It will feature a cocktail reception, dinner and multicultural programming, and is also a tribute to veterans. Tickets are $125 each or $100 for students.
Other activities will take place at the Aberdeen Tulip Pavilion. There will be fireworks displays, appearances by Doo Doo the Clown, a tulip painting workshop and a tulip photography workshop.
