Ottawa soccer fans looking to watch professional games will be relieved that their city will host the first expansion team in the fledgling Canadian Premier League.
The new club will be called Atletico Ottawa, to reflect its ownership by Spanish soccer giant Atletico Madrid. The club is part of an investment by Atletico to help develop youth players and scout for talent in North America.
Atletico Ottawa, or “Ottleti” as supporters have begun calling it, will be the 8th team in the CPL. The all-Canadian league launched last year and had a successful inaugural season, with Hamilton’s Forge FC defeating the Calgary-based Cavalry to claim the first championship.
Ottawa was previously home to the Ottawa Fury, who played in the North American Soccer League and USL Championship from 2014 to 2019, but closed its doors last fall after experiencing licensing difficulties.
Atletico Ottawa was officially announced in January, and in February revealed its Logo Design and badge at a special event at Craft Beer Market. The blue and white stripes of Atletico will likely be featured in future poster printing campaigns. The goal of the event was to join together the histories and fanbases of the Fury and the new squad, with many supporters wearing gear from both teams.
