Inspired by Chinese tradition, the Water Lantern Festival is open to all. A ticket will get entrants their own floating lantern on which they can draw or write what they want, sending a message or image out to the world.
The event is promoted as a way to create connections and togetherness, with organizers saying:
“The Water Lantern Festival is filled with fun, happiness, hope and good memories that you will cherish all your life. It's a family event that can be shared by everyone. Friends, families, neighbors and many others whom you have not met yet can come together to create a peaceful and memorable experience.”
The festival is put on by a group which holds similar festivals across North America. They were voted the #1 Cultural Festival by readers of USA Today. Ottawa’s version of the event will include local food, music and vendors leading up to dusk and the releasing of the glowing lanterns into Britannia Bay, just south of the Ottawa River separating Ontario from Quebec. Cultural events like this are both promoted and remembered through tools like brochure printing and Promotional Products like the lantern festival’s commemorative Bags.
The Ottawa Water Lantern Festival will take place on August 17 at Andrew Haydon Park. All lanterns used are ecologically sustainable, made out of wood and rice paper, and will be tidied up when the event finishes.
