This July will see the World Rugby Pacific Four Series coming to Ottawa, including the Canadian national team competing in international play.
The Series is a new competition that aims to pit the best sides in women’s rugby outside of Europe against each other, with Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand facing off in a round-robin tournament. The first match was hosted in Madrid on April 1, with Canada defeating USA 50-17, and the tournament will continue with an Australia/New Zealand rivalry match in Brisbane on June 29. The remaining four matches will all take place in Ottawa in a pair of double-headers, with Canada first facing New Zealand and then Australia, and the US women’s side taking on the opposite team in the opening bout.
The teams will compete in full, 15-a-side games of rugby union. The top three teams will qualify for the new WXV series, where they will take on the top three from Europe’s Six Nations series. It will be the first time since 2015 that Canada has hosted a major test series in women’s rugby, with all four teams sitting inside the world top 10. International sporting events often feature rowdy fans, with custom banner printing and songs, and provide a chance to see athletes that compete at World Cups and other global stages.
The World Rugby Pacific Four Series will be played in Ottawa on July 8 and July 14 at TD Place.
