An annual Ottawa festival dedicated to the art of stone carving will be holding its second virtual event next month, followed by an auction to raise money for charities in the capital.
The Canadian Stone Carving Festival typically features dozens of carvers coming together to create works in a marathon session at the Sparks Street mall, and the carvers use only traditional hand tools. The virtual event will instead allow carvers to work from the comfort of their homes, whether it be a well-equipped studio or a kitchen table. The festival will provide a Facebook page for participants to provide glimpses of their works in progress and to give each other tips of the trade and encouragement.
The finished carvings will be auctioned off at the end of the event, with all proceeds going to local non-profits to help benefit people in need in the capital region. The auction will take place through an online stream. Last year’s event, also held virtually, raised over $10,000.

The Canadian Stone Carving Festival will begin its carving period on July 1. The finished pieces will be sold in a virtual auction from July 23 to 25.
