The City of Ottawa is turning to the public for ideas and feedback on the new stations that will be created as part of the coming light-rail expansion.
Stage 2 of Ottawa’s LRT expansion, also known as the O-Train, will add 24 stations to the system. The western end of the Confederation Line will continue through Westboro and to Moodie, with a branch off towards what is now known as Baseline Station. The original southbound line will also be extended to Ottawa Airport and Limebank, while the Confederation Line will continue east to Place d’Orleans and Trim. All of these new stations will need names, to be included on station maps inside cars and for maps printed as part of brochure printing campaigns.
While all of the proposed stations have provisional names based on existing Transitway stations or geographical location, the city is also looking to provide some of them with new names. As part of the plans, Baseline is set to be renamed as Algonquin Station, in reference to the nearby college as well as the Indigenous group, and Dominion Station as Kichi Sibi, after the Algonquin name for the Ottawa River. The city’s criteria for names includes having strong geographic meaning, being easy to write and pronounce in both English and French, and being distinct from existing transit stations.
The city of Ottawa will be taking feedback and suggestion on station names until August 26. The Stage 2 expansion is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
