The Ottawa International Animation Festival will be back this September, with an edition that looks back at the work of famed animators as well as showcasing the latest in the field.
The festival, the largest of its kind in North America, is noted for bringing artists from the animation industry as well as film aficionados to the nation’s capital every year. The centre of the festival is the official competition, featuring several features and dozens of short films from around the world. The top films will receive recognition from a jury, with moviegoers also able to vote for a fan favourite award. This year’s awards include categories such as Virtual Awards and Non-Narrative Shorts.
The 2023 edition will also feature a retrospective paying tribute to the work of acclaimed Japanese animator Masaaki Yuasa, including screenings of his feature films as well as television episodes and rare short films. There will also be events focusing on Canadian indie animator Justin Tomchuk and China’s Xi Chen, in addition to career events aimed at animators and others in the industry. OIAF is also noted around Ottawa for its eye-catching poster printing, and this year is no different, with a minimalist poster design from veteran Canadian animator Matthew Rankin.
The 2023 Ottawa International Animation Festival will take place from September 20 to 24. Venues include the ByTowne Cinemata, National Arts Centre, and Ottawa Art Gallery.
