North America’s biggest film festival focused entirely on animation will be returning for 2020, but in a new virtual format.
The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) typically features screenings of cutting-edge and experimental animation from around the world. Awards are given out by a jury in categories like Narrative Short, Student, Commissioned and the recent edition Virtual Reality. There is also a chance to vote after each screening for a “people’s choice” award.
In addition to the screenings, OIAF coincides with The Animation Conference, a professional gathering for people involved in the animation industry. This makes Ottawa a key gathering place for animators, much like any trade conference with introductions being made and Business Cards changing hand.
This year’s show will feature six feature films and 92 short films, selected from a total of 1,950 submissions, in addition to 57 films selected to highlight Canadian animators. The selections range from ‘Kill It and Leave This Town’, a dark feature from Polish director Mariusz Wilczynski to Japanese children’s short ‘The Girl from the Other Side’ by the acclaimed Wit Studio.
This year, films will be screened online, as well as talks and seminars that would typically be part of The Animation Conference. Studios and employers will have virtual booths as part of the digital effort.
