The Canadian Museum of Nature has launched its latest exhibit on a topic that Ottawa residents are well-acquainted with – the cold.
The exhibit, called “Planet Ice: Mysteries of the Ice Ages”, aims to chronicle the ways in which nature has adapted to meet ice and cold over a span of 80,000 years. A special focus is put on the prehistoric Ice Age and the changes it caused, including the development of giant animals and the migration of humans to the Americas.
Over 120 items are featured in the exhibit, including real specimens and artifacts, alongside models and re-creations. These include a lifelike recreation of a Neanderthal adult and child and tools used by the Tunit and Thule-Inuit people.
Planet Ice is divided into five zones, from “The Power of Ice” set in “Deep Time” to the modern-day “Cold Connections”, each with its own interactive features. The Museum of Nature is known for its colourful promotion of feature exhibits, including its billboards and use of banner printing, with Banners often hanging outside the building.
Due to social distancing restrictions, the museum is offering a more intimate experience to visitors, with each visiting group having the exhibit to themselves for a pre-scheduled time slot.
The Planet Ice exhibit is currently open at the Canadian Museum of Nature and will run until January 3, when it will begin an international tour.
