A new short-form TV and web series aims to find comedy in the Ottawa suburb of Stittsville, starring a viral social media star.
The series is called “Stittsville on Patrol” and stars Brian Milks, better known as the author of locally popular Twitter account @Brian5or6. On social media, Milks plays the role of a fanatical Ottawa Senators fan prone to fits of rage at the team’s setbacks, such as destroying his television after star Erik Karlsson was traded.
In Stittsville on Patrol, Milks makes his acting debut as Simon Bauche, a self-appointed patrol officer in the National Capital Region suburb who is obsessed with correcting small infractions, ranging from over-long grass to mis-parked scooters. The series includes a strong element of improvisation and is inspired by Canadian comedy shows like Trailer Park Boys.
The series is the brainchild of Ottawa-based director Chris Redmond, who currently works largely as a director of children’s television. It was originally planned as a feature film, but was re-configured as a series of 12 six-minute episodes. Guest appearances include local singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards and former Senator Chris Phillips.
The now-widespread availability of cameras and streaming platforms has led to a boom in low-budget, grassroots comedy series, often making money through Promotional Products like T-Shirts and Posters.
The first season of Stittsville on Patrol is now streaming on YouTube and will air on Thursday nights on Bell TV.
