Ottawa will welcome the North American tour of the award-winning stage adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King this October, bringing one of Broadway’s most successful shows to Canada’s capital.
The musical adapts the story of the 1994 animated film through symbolic acts of stagecraft, including costumed human performers, giant puppets, unique sets, and more, originally created by director Julie Taymor. It features the Elton John and Tim Rice-written songs from the original film as well as new numbers.
The original Broadway production is one of the longest-running shows in history and the highest-grossing, in addition to winning several Tony Awards. The Ottawa show is part of the third major North American tour of the production, dubbed the “Rafiki Tour”, and is currently the only scheduled Canadian appearance.
Performing in this edition are Darian Sanders as Simba, Kalifa White as Nala, Gerald Ramsey as Mufasa, and Peter Hargrave as Scar. The Ottawa run will last for over two weeks and feature almost two dozen performances, including matinees on weekends. Major musicals like this often use promotional items like flyer printing as well as local radio and other media to help attract families and theatre lovers alike.
The Ottawa run of Disney’s The Lion King will take place from October 24 to November 10 at Southam Hall in the National Arts Centre.
