A fledgling awards ceremony designed to honour the best of Ottawa’s music scene will hold its sophomore instalment this April, with nominations still open.
The Capital Music Awards is organized by the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) to recognize the best artists performing in the National Capital Region. The event first took place last March in a ceremony at Club SAW, and it saw Le Groupe Swing take home Band of the Year, among other awards. This year’s ceremony will be a little different, taking place over an online stream, but it will look to capture the same festive atmosphere.
This year’s award process will feature a greater element of fan voting to determine the nominees and winners. In 2020, only one award – Entertainer of the Year – was determined by public voting. Members of OMIC will be able to nominate artists or works for categories such as Album of the Year and Best Production and Arrangements, along with a special recognition for Virtual Performance of the Year.
A public vote will be held for three categories to determine the award winners, which will be announced at the virtual awards show. Local recognition in events like this, which are often advertised by tools like poster printing and word of mouth, can help encourage and boost up-and-coming artists, as well as honour the work of veteran artists.
The Capital Music Awards will take place digitally on April 29. Public voting will be held between April 1 and 14.
