Workshop on offer to Richmond gardeners

As more people become interested in living a sustainable lifestyle, gardening is growing in popularity, and an upcoming Richmond workshop will offer advice and tips for dealing with insects and other pests.

Integrated pest management combines a variety of ways of controlling weeds, insects and other unwanted garden visitors into an overall program. The class will introduce some of these, and going pesticide free will be a theme that runs throughout the session.

The learners will be introduced to the assortment of pests that may be encountered in Richmond's vegetable and fruit beds, and they will learn how to create a plan that incorporates practices at different times of the year to keep them at bay. A discussion of how knowing their ecology may be helping in breaking their lifecycle is on the agenda, and it was explained that these may be useful in dealing with even persistent insects.

Hosting a horticultural class can help community members to get growing, and any handouts that are needed for such a class can be prepared by area Print shops.

The A Year-Round Approach to Pest Management in Gardens event will be providing an introduction to the benefits of using integrated pest management techniques at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25th. It will take place for approximately an hour, and the venue is located at 2631 Westminster Highway.
