One grade four student from Richmond recently had his chance to live his dream of being a police officer for a day.
Michael Cui, a 10-year-old with Down Syndrome, had made a video appeal using his tablet to the RCMP letting them know about his dream of wanting to help people and asking them to make them come true.
Once they heard about his goal, the police came together to make his wish happen.
They worked with the staff at his school to organize an assembly, and he marched in wearing his police uniform that had been custom made for him, surrounded by members of the RCMP. Cpl. Kevin Krygier, who had helped to make the event possible, was on hand to share in his new friend’s pride.
In addition to the assembly, Michael was made an honorary Chief of Police in the City of Richmond and had a chance to sit in the driver’s place in an RCMP vehicle, where he received high fives from his friends and he spoke to them through its intercom system. To help further commemorate the event, he was given his own set of RCMP Business Cards, which are something that can be produced by a business card printing firm.
Pat Hanbury, who is the director of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, praised the RCMP for its efforts. He also pointed out that once he is older, Michael may have the opportunity of a career in his dream job, as people living with this condition can attend university and go on to work in their communities.
