Personal aircraft banned from parks and school grounds

Drones and other such aircraft may soon be banned from city parks as well as school grounds, according to recent sources.

The present regulation prohibits only personal flying devices that are powered by gas, but the revisions to the bylaw will be examined by authorities on April 13th, as city planners want to update due to advancements in technology.

Richmond’s manager of park’s programs, Marie Fenwick, explained:

“Since that time, there have been considerable changes in technology and practices related to sports, recreation and leisure activities.

“Consequently, many provisions of the existing bylaw have become obsolete, fail to adequately address public safety issues or maintain the environmental, recreational and social benefits of public parks and school grounds.”

Drones will also not be allowed in the dyke trail.

Residents will have the option to request an exemption depending on circumstances, according to Fenwick. The city council and school board staff, as well as police officers, are automatically exempt from the new changes to the bylaw.

It has not yet been made clear whether or not there have been any complaints in regards to the aircraft being operated for personal use in the parks and trails.

Environmental factors will also be featured in the new regulations, including points such as the handling of plant species that are considered invasive.
