New exhibit showcases First Nation artists

The exhibition "Interweavings", which opened this month, is showing at the Richmond Art Gallery until January of next year. It is produced in collaboration with the YVR Art Foundation.

The show highlights First Nation artists, working in both the contemporary and traditional genres, who have received scholarships from the YVR Art Foundation. It has been curated by Nan Capogna and Connie Watts.

Works on display include such items as paintings, woodcarvings, printmaking, and jewelry. In addition, those who mentored these artists will also be displaying some of their own work. Some of the artists participating in this exhibition include Rick Adkins, James Harry, Ariane Medley, and Marika Swan.

In a related event, a panel discussion entitled "Challenging Traditions on Contemporary First Nations Art" will take place later this week. It will discuss the role of mentoring and the different perspectives of the artists.

This event will no doubt attract many visitors from the Richmond area, including those who are employed at graphics or printing companies who are interested in contemporary art.

"Interweavings" is on display at the Richmond Art Gallery until January 11th, 2015. The art gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00am to 6:00pm, and 9:00pm on Thursday and weekends from 10:00am - 5:00pm. The panel discussion will be held on November 29th from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. To find out more about this exhibition, call 604-247-8300.
