Learn how to have a more sustainable community

The City of Richmond will be holding several environmental sustainability workshops through the month of March. These workshops will be teaching about how we can create a sustainable community, environmentally, and reduce the amount of pesticides we use. The workshops are free and open to those over the age of 16.

Several upcoming workshops include:

• Edible Wild – March 24 at the Terra Nova Rural Park from 10 am-noon
• Backyard and Balcony/Patio Composting – March 24 at the Terra Nova Rural Park from 1-2:30 pm
• Pest Management for Small Fruits – March 25 at the Hamilton Community Centre from 9:30 am-noon
• Pest Management for Tree Fruits – March 25 at the Hamilton Community Centre from 1-3:30 pm
• Garden Design – March 31 at Richmond City Hall from 10 am-noon
• Ecological Gardening – March 31 at Cambie Community Centre from 1-2:30 pm

These workshops are a part of Richmond's enhanced water conservation, sustainability, and water reduction initiatives and their pesticide management program.

Many Richmond businesses are actively trying to comply with the City’s suggestions. For example, printing companies in the area follow their own industries codes of practice. In nearby Victoria, printing companies must comply with the Printing Operations Code of Practice which includes installing machinery which treats liquid wastes or having prohibited and restricted wastes collected for offsite management, not discharging waste products into the sewers, performing regular inspections of treatment works, creating a spill response plan, and keeping written records of all the procedures taken.

Taking care of the Earth is everyone’s responsibility and the more we all learn about how to do that, the better off we all will be.
