Residents of the city of Richmond are reminded that lawn-sprinkling restrictions have come into effect for the 2016 season.
The measures, which have been enacted to help ensure there is an adequate supply of clean drinking water during the driest part of the year, require the public to limit the watering of their lawns to the morning hours.
Properties on the side of the street with even numbers may do so on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, while those with odd numbers may do so on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. This applies only to the irrigation of grass, and not the watering of other vegetation such as vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees, or other garden areas.
Along with the watering regulations, a new website has been launched to help people and businesses plan their landscape using plant species, and techniques that are well suited to the local conditions. This includes the use of native species, choosing plants with low water requirements, and xeriscaping. These can be applied to any property, whether it is a pot or window box on a balcony, a small garden patch in a backyard, or plots that cover a large area. Brochures can be mailed out to all property owners to give them, more information about gardening ideas like these that are friendly to the environment.
Further details about the city’s lawn sprinkling policies can be found on its website.
