The Titanic arrives in Edmonton

Titanic: the Artifact Exhibition will be showing at Telus World of Science Edmonton until February 20, 2012. This exhibition features over 200 real artefacts from the Titanic; these were obtained from the wreckage of the ocean liner. Admission for both Edmonton Science and the Titanic exhibit are $23.95 for adults, $18.95 for 13-17, $15.95 for 3-12 and $20.95 for seniors.

While the exhibit features many artefacts, it concentrates more on the human side of things. Each person who buys a ticket also receives a replica boarding pass with the name of a real passenger on it. At the end of the tour they can match the name up with the one on the memorial wall to find out if that person survived or not. The type of artefacts shown in the exhibition includes perfume bottles, a ship’s bell, coins and silverware. There are also recreations of 1st class cabins and those cabins below deck.

The Titanic sinking is one event of the 20th century that seems to have touched all of us in one way or the other. An award-winning movie brought it back into the international consciousness as did the finding of the wreckage of the ship. The Titanic exhibit has been travelling the world since the early 21st century; visiting such countries as the UK, the United States and Canada. Another way in which the Titanic story is kept alive is through merchandising. The public can buy replicas of everything from china to jewellery. Printing companies have also provided replica newspapers of the time of the sinking, telegrams, Menus and photographs. Visitors to the Titanic exhibit in Edmonton can view these items and then go online to purchase replicas of what interests them.
