New development planned for Edmonton

If a new set of plans comes to fruition, the area of Edmonton near the Stadium LRT station will soon have a condo tower that features townhouses and front gardens.

The concept is for an urban village-style development with room for up to 2,100 residents, where people can enjoy spending time socializing in the outdoor public spaces. A proposal was submitted to the city council outlining the plans for the 3.6 hectare area that was the former site of Muttar Industrial, and it is expected that public hearings for the project will take place over the summer.

One of the pieces of the design will be for there to be fewer parking spaces for motorized vehicles, while increasing the number of bike spaces.

There would also be private doors for each of the ground level units, and front yards that give the people living in them a chance to enjoy their own outdoor space.

It is also hoped that the whole thing have a pedestrian-friendly feel. A printing company will be able to create signage that encourages vehicle drivers to be on the lookout for people who are walking.

It is expected that the route between the development and the LRT will be able to accommodate a wide variety of small stores and services, such as coffee shops, to meet the needs of those walking to the station.
