New comic portrays police history in a different way

Edmonton Police Service has many interesting stories to tell, and with its new series of digital comics, people both young and old will now have a chance to learn more about the force.

The first edition highlighted the life and career of Alex Decoteau, who was Canada’s first aboriginal police officer. He was also an Olympic athlete and a decorated soldier during World War One. He joined the police service in 1909, where he rose to the rank of sergeant before representing the country at the Stockholm Olympics in the field of running.

He joined the army in 1916, where he served his country with valor. Decoteau was shot and killed by a sniper during the second battle of Passchendaele in 1917.

The comic was distributed online, with a special 3,000 printed editions being given to students. Most of them knew nothing about him, so it was an opportunity for them to learn something about the area’s history.

Future publications are expected to cover a wide range of topics dealing with the history of the police services. Some suggestions included the canine unit, the use of airplanes in law enforcement, as well as many other stories.

Though the comic is expected to mainly be produced in a digital format, special printed versions will be made available upon request to schools. A printing company can provide assistance in their production.
