More than 350 people visited the Westin Hotel Ballroom to take part in the Laurel Awards recently. The ceremony recognized and celebrated the hard work carried out by not-for-profit organizations throughout the Edmonton region.
This was the 19th year for the event, and 25 groups were nominated. A Print company were also called upon to produce special programs for the evening.
The Gold award, along with a prize of $3,000, went to the Alberta Cancer Foundation for its patronage and work on the Linac-MR set-up. This program seeks to utilize research to bring the most innovative and modern cancer treatment methods to the citizens of Alberta.
Through the years, the organization has contributed more than $4m in funds to this goal, and the money has been put to good use in developing MRI-targeted radiation for cancer treatment.
The Silver Laurel award was presented to Edmonton’s Women’s Shelter for its WIN III program, which provides services to refugee, immigrant, and trafficked women. It is the first initiative of its kind in the country.
The Bronze award and prize went to Outreach for Life’s Supportive Arts program, which is a 12-week course providing parenting skills to young families.
The final Staff’s Choice prize was given to Dogs With Wings, which provides trained service animals to clients through victim’s service agencies.
There are so many groups that carry out good work in the city, and during its 19 years, the Laurel Awards have given more than $100,000 in prizes to help them achieve their goals.
