Help on hand for seniors in Edmonton suffering financial abuse

In Edmonton, a new program has been initiated to help seniors that are being financially abused. A partnership has been formed between Edmonton’s Elder Abuse Intervention Team, Edmonton police, the City of Edmonton, Alberta Treasury Branch Financial (ATB), Catholic Social Services and the Victorian Order of Nurses. With assistance by the other aforementioned groups, the bank has begun a program to identify when financial abuse is happening to seniors. They will then talk to them about it, as well as advising the police about the incidents.

Many cases come to light only after thousands of dollars have been stolen, and raising public awareness through such a scheme, in tandem with a poster or flyer campaign, could do much to prevent it.

Other financial institutions do spot and report financial abuse in the elderly. This program is unique in that it now officialises the process.

Karen Comeau, ATB Financial vice-president said that all employees have received training. New staff will be trained as well. Comeau has witnessed financial abuse in elders and will testify at an upcoming case in court.

“It just tears the family apart and it puts so much stress on the senior citizen. Nothing ever good comes of it.”

said Comeau.

Police constable Jared Buhler said that he has seen this crime committed far too many times. Often, a senior who may suffer a degenerative disease has been manipulated out of money.

There are approximately 1,000 calls a year, according to a team social worker. When calls are serious enough, a visit is made by a team consisting of a social worker, police officer and a nurse.
Flyers and Posters are a way for organisations to raise the profile of any program such as this, and Print companies in Edmonton are on hand to help.
