The ties between Edmonton and China have grown even stronger this month, with one of Asia’s most famous artists, Fan Zeng, choosing to display some of his work at a gallery in the city. This will be the first time that he has shown his work in North America.
Zeng, who lectures at a Nonkai University near the city of Beijing, was granted an honorary degree from the University of Alberta last year. Since the trip to Canada to receive his certificate in person was thought to be too much for the elderly artist, representatives of the school traveled to his home nation to honor him there. This is the first time a Canadian university has done this.
This year, however, the institution was very surprised when it received a request from Zeng to travel to Edmonton so he could visit the students and display some of his favorite pieces. He made the trip from China, and dozens of his artworks traveled right along with him in their own designated seat.
The paintings, which were completed in a traditional ink and brush style, will be on display until October 26 in the gallery at Enterprise Square between Jasper Avenue and 102nd Street. The exhibition is being run as a joint project between the city and the University of Alberta.
A local Print company was called upon to produce pamphlets for the showcase. These will be used to describe each piece and put it into context for the visitor.
