Students in the Engineering program at the Edmonton Campus of the University of Alberta recently took part in an event designed to test their programming abilities, showcasing them to industry experts.
The event, labelled HackED, was a 24 hour ‘hackathon’ where the students worked to solve programming issues, as well as create websites and smartphone apps that showcased the expertise on hand.
It was held in the downtown area at Startup Edmonton.
The projects – which included an app designed to connect students wishing to buy and sell used text Books, and one that worked as electronic dance pads – were judged by representatives from such firms as Microsoft, GE, Intuit, Startup Edmonton and the University of Alberta. They were rated on their technical difficulty, viability, originality and quality of their sales pitch.
The prizes included items like an Xbox One, but participants were hoping to catch the attention of recruiters in their chosen field.
According to the event’s organizer, by the end, those who took part were tired but proud of what they had been able to accomplish in such a short time.
