Before taping up Posters on high traffic street corners or distributing handbills to advertise key events, flyer printing companies in Edmonton are urging clients to familiarize themselves with city bylaws to avoid fines and save paper. There are two sections of the City of Edmonton’s bylaw acts that pertain to the placement and distribution of handbills and Posters. The first is traffic, which handles advertising on or near roads, freeways and sidewalks.
Bylaw 5590 is very specific in which types of poles that Posters and Signs may be attached to. Placement is restricted to Edmonton’s standard grey street light poles or octagonal poles with a downward facing lamp. Any poster or notice must be affixed with transparent Tape. Another other type of pole, such as the old-fashioned types seen on Whyte Avenue, may not have anything affixed to it.
The bylaw also states that street furniture may not be used to post Signs, Flyers or Posters. This pertains to bus benches, garbage bins, newspaper Boxes, and cable, telephone or traffic control Boxes.
Free standing Signs on corners and along Edmonton freeways, may not be erected unless a permit is issued from the city.
Responsibility for posted Flyers and Signs lie with the individual or corporation referred to on that particular signage, whether or not permission for placement on locations contravening the bylaw was granted.
Distribution of handbills and Flyers is governed by the City of Edmonton’s Public Places Bylaws and is much more generous in its criteria. Bylaw 14614 stipulates that the only location where people may not distribute advertising in this manner is in hotels and motels, unless permission is by the property is issued in advance. Most hotels, particularly downtown have “no soliciting” Signs at public entrances. As with the sign bylaw, individuals or corporations whose names appear on handbills and Flyers are the responsible parties when enforcing this bylaw.
