Alberta is home to the largest portion of the cross country Trans Canada Trail, and the goal is for the route to be finished in time for the 150 birthday celebrations for Canada. Edmonton is included in the plan.
The CEO of the TransCanada Trail Association, Deborah Apps, recently told of group of stakeholders and other interested parties that the price tag for the completion of the project comes in at around $12.5 million. The goal is for all the work to be done by 2017.
The trail includes a point where it branches off into four different sections, one heading up to the Yukon and North West territories, one going west towards Grand Prairie, one south towards Banff, and the eastern portion, which stretches from Edmonton to Elk Point and beyond which is nearly finished. A Print company will be able to produce such things as trail markers, descriptive Signs that provide information about the historical places, flora and fauna that users of the system may find along the way. The can be made from durable materials that will withstand the elements and last for a long time.
For his part, the provincial Minister of Culture remarked that the trail is important and promotes such things as healthy living and tourism. The Edmonton river valley section of the route provides a free recreational opportunity for residents in the surrounding community and the rest of the city as well.
