Video game fans in Edmonton recently came together in an event that combined their love of games with helping ill children in their local community.
The ‘24 Hour Extra Life’ game marathon once again raised money that was donated to Stollery Children’s Hospital.
The event took place at the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre, and saw nearly 200 participants come together to try and raise as much as $60,000, while still more joined in by playing at home.
The goal for everyone was to try and raise over $100,000.
One player remarked to the Edmonton Sun that the most challenging part of the event was staying awake the full 24 hours, which was especially difficult during the very early morning portion of the marathon To help with this, there were plenty of energy drinks available, as well as snacks and other activities to help break up the monotony of keeping one’s eyes glued to the screen. A printer can produce custom Drinkware that has been printed with the event logo, which can be used both during the marathon and kept as a souvenir afterwards.
The teams took part in a variety of games using several different gaming platforms and consoles. The efforts of those who participated were part of a larger, North America-wide effort by computer enthusiasts to help raise money for their own local children’s hospitals.
