The Chrysalis Achievement Awards were presented to 80 people and organizations from the Edmonton area on Sunday.
One of those honored was Charlie Weinzieri, who was given the 2013 Artist of the Year prize.
A year ago, Mr Weinzieri started attending the Chrysalis art program where he learned different painting skills and techniques. He quickly took to the creative activities and began to produce commissioned pieces covering such subjects as boats, totem poles and wildlife.
He explained that he finds painting to be very relaxing and also inspiring, and said it has taught him about dedication and perseverance. This enthusiasm, coupled with his humble and selfless nature, led judges to believe he represents the program perfectly.
The Chrysalis art initiative is in its sixth year, and has come a long way since its inception. It began as a simple seminar but now offers a real studio environment for artists. The program is particularly helpful to people with autism, as well as those who are quiet or have issues with anger.
With detailed instruction, it provides the opportunity for the participants to practice the skills they have learned, not just in painting but with human interaction as well.
While the art program is relatively new, this is the 23rd year for the awards ceremony, which recognizes and honors individual recipients, volunteers, and groups for their hard work and the contributions they make to the community.
Poster printing is often used by the organizers of awards events in Edmonton, with eye-catching designs useful for providing attendees with the details they need.
