Metropolis Edmonton International Winter Festival takes place every weekend from noon-10 pm until February 20; the event began with a bang on New Year’s Eve. This free family-friendly event takes place in various locations throughout the city.
Installations of scaffolding wrapped in white shrink wrap are set up at City Hall, various downtown spots and at Sir Winston Churchill Square; each installation is designed by local architects. The festival includes lots of children’s activities, informative displays, a beer tent, weekly celebrations and the Taste of Winter.
Taste of Winter features food such as soups and chilis from 12 area restaurants as well as hot and cold beverages from St. City Roasters. The Children’s Pavilion features a 44-foot inflatable slide, an overhead walkway, an electronic mural art contest, arts and crafts and musical performers. The Polar Brewhouse features the beers of the Canadian Brewhouse. The Community Centre will be holding weekly celebrations such as a Chinese New Year celebration from January 23-24.
With the current mild temperatures in Edmonton, the odds are the festival will draw more people than ever. It is a great way to get out and enjoy what the city has to offer. Local printing companies have no doubt been busy helping the organizers of the festival with advertising, informational Brochures and other marketing tools. Since this is a free festival, other than the food or beer, working with a local company to provide these items would be the most economical route to take.
