Calgary will be holding a full day's worth of events to celebrate United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21 at Sir Winston Churchill Square. The theme of this year's event will be "Sustainable peace for a sustainable future." This is a free event.

The day will start off at 10:30 AM with opening ceremonies held at City Hall with emcee Ryan Jespersen of Breakfast TV. The keynote speech will be given by Doug Roche; student choirs will also be performing during the ceremony as will other musical performers. The raising of the peace flag will take place at 12 noon and a moment of silence will be observed. In addition to the outdoor activities, there will be a peace display inside of the main room at City Hall. Local non-profit groups and community organizations will be providing information to the community. No doubt they will be working with Edmonton brochure printers who will help to provide them with literature to hand out to those who are interested.

From 5:00 Pm to 9:00 PM, Step Up and Step In will be hosting the You Can music festival. The festival will feature local musicians and groups. Step Up and Step In is an organization dedicated to ending teen violence.

Communities throughout the world will be celebrating the UN International Day of Peace. This is the ninth year that it has bee so recognized in Edmonton.
