What's Happening in Edmonton, AB…

Vikings soar into Edmonton

Even though Vikings may have invaded the city of Edmonton, there was no reason to fear - they were simply here to take part in the fun. January 11 marked the seventh annual Deep Freeze Festival, and it was time for the city’s residents come out and enjoy themselves in the cold.

There was something for everyone, young and old. Whether it was taking in the work of the ice sculptors, sailing down the giant ice slide or playing in a street hockey game, there was fun for all. The ice sculpture competition was so popular that people came from as far away as Holland to compete.

One of the highlights of the event was the Cool Runnin’s race. To participate, all one needed to have was an old deep freeze in which to ride, some strong team mates willing to push it along the 40m track and a good sense of humor. Some of the teams really defied the cold and competed dressed only in their speedos.

Foodies were sure to have enjoyed sampling the many different dishes from cold climates all over the world. They enjoyed tourtier, perogies and even spit roasted pig.

The Odin’s Ravens historical reenactment group gave demonstrations of Viking combat and their more peaceful village life. With the theme for this year being “The Vikings are Coming”, it was the perfect way to round out one’s festival experience.

An event such as this can often require the use of printed materials such as banners, race bibs and other promotional items. A print company can easily provide all of these.
