The Works: Art and Design Festival jump starts summer

The Works: Art and Design Festival takes place in downtown Edmonton from June 23 to July 5, 2011. The festival, which began as a yearly event in 1986 becomes more popular every year. Companies who provide printing services welcome this event as a way of celebrating design and how it can be used in public places.

The majority of the festival events will take place in Sir Winston Churchill Square. However, there will also be several areas in the Arts District and downtown. The festival will feature 43 one-of-a-kind art exhibits and installations and 250 special events. The opening night party at Sir Winston Churchill Square will feature the Australian band OKA. It runs from 7:30 to 9:30pm.

The Works stage in the Square will feature Works with Jazz and will feature various performances of experimental music and jazz. Constructions : Contemporary Norwegian Arts and Crafts, presented The Norwegian Association of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take place at the Citadel Theatre downtown. The Works Canadian Aboriginal Artists Program will be featured in 6 separate exhibits; artists include Sonny Assu and Jackson 2Bears. While there will be several art installations, the biggest one will be a 1200 square-foot installation by artist Ian Johnston at the Square.

The aim of The Works: Art and Design Festival is to “celebrate the power of right brain thinking.” Printing companies strive to open people’s minds to new possibilities in marketing and festivals such as this can only further those ideas.
