What's Happening in Edmonton, AB…

Shop and eat locally

Live-Local Alberta has declared November to be Shop Local First Month. Their goal is to emphasize the importance of buying from local businesses. Jessie Radies, founder of Live Local Alberta gave a talk in Edmonton on November 21 which emphasized the economic and societal impact of shopping locally. It has even been said that shopping locally helps to “eradicate poverty and create sustainable neighbourhoods.” For each $100 spent locally, $48 stays in the community.

With more and more people doing their shopping online, local businesses are often suffering since they can’t always offer the same low prices or the convenience. There are many reasons why shopping locally is better for everyone. For example, many printing companies offer online services such as business card and stationery printing. Those who order them can either be located in Edmonton or any part of the country and can have the product delivered to their door. However, it is not only bad for local business; this is also bad for the environment. The carbon footprint is greatly reduced by buying locally; the customer can pick up their own order thereby saving on the amount of energy expanded for door-to-door delivery. Also, if the client has any questions about their order they can visit the office and tell them exactly what they want done.

Buying locally helps to create jobs, it keeps money in the community and it helps to foster pride in a community. Shop Local First Month is only the first of such events in Edmonton.
