Human rights workers to be honored in Edmonton

December 10 is United Nations International Human Rights Day - a day that celebrates the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Many communities around the world use this day to honor those who work for human rights in their countries and cities. The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, located in Edmonton, will be holding its Human Rights Awards Gala and fundraiser on that day.

The Human Rights Awards come in six categories and are handed out by the Centre at the gala. Those categories are child (14 and under), youth (15-25), individual, non-profit, business, and new and emerging. The nominees were voted on by the general public through a ballot on the Centre's website.

The keynote speaker for this year's gala will be Alberta Premier Alison Redford and the evening will be hosted by Adrian LaChance. In addition to the awards presentations, dinner will be served and there will be a silent auction. Local Edmonton businesses will no doubt be donating the majority of the items in the auction. They may choose to work with local printing companies to produce flyers to let their customers and clients know that they have donated the item and encourage them to attend the event.

The 6th annual Human Rights Awards Gala will take place at the Sutton Place Hotel on December 10 beginning at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $100 or $750 for a table of eight. For more information, contact Nehal Mahmoud at 780-453-2638.
