What's Happening in Edmonton, AB…

Edmonton has big plans for its riverside areas

If things go as planned, Edmonton residents will soon have a new and exciting way to get together with their neighbors, friends, and families while spending time along the river.

The city council will be looking at a plan this month to construct a promenade that will be known as “Touch the Water”. The vision includes walkways along the water with access to riverside restaurants, cafes, and other attractions.

One of the main goals is to make it as accessible as possible to everyone, including those who are elderly or physically challenged. Some form of mechanical transportation will be included in the design, but it hasn’t been decided yet what form this will take.

The city currently has a well-developed trail system, but none of the paths allow the public easy access to the water. The proposed plan will let people reach the water’s edge via steps or piers. There will also be a boat launch and a footbridge to Terwilliger Park.

Funding for the project will be shared equally between the federal, provincial and city governments. In order for it to be completed, several parcels of private land will need to be purchased, and $20 million of the funds will be allocated for this use.

A plan such as this can bring new life to an urban area, both in economic and recreational terms. This will also provide spinoff benefits for a wide range of businesses, and new companies springing up can take advantage of flyer printing and stationery printing services.
