Observe the National Day of Remembrance in Calgary
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women will be observed on December 6 in Canada. The day was started in 1991 by Status of Women Canada in recognition of 14 women who were murdered on that day in Montreal in 1989. A poster has been created for the event which features one red rose. If you wish to remember the day you can print the poster; printing it out directly from your printer and posting it where others can see it will remind them of the cause.
On that day, The University of Calgary will be holding a memorial service which will take place in the Great Hall at The Rosza Centre. The service will be emceed by Catherine Fisher of the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad. Featured speakers, all from the University, will be Lana M. Wells, Adrienne Kertzer and Jocelyn Kellin. Music will be provided by Walter MacDonald White Bear and the “Wapi-Win” (Vision) Trio.
In preparation for the December 6 memorial, many at the University will be making candles the week of November 14-.18 These candles will be sold to those who plan to attend the event and proceeds go towards maintaining the Women’s Resource Centre.
There will be several observances of this day throughout the country. December 6 is also the end of the White Ribbon Campaign opposed to violence against women. That campaign begins on November 25 which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
