Werribee is one of the top three suburbs for dog ownership in the city, with rates expected to increase in newer growth areas like Manor Lakes and Mambourin.
A rapidly growing population, combined with shrinking land sizes, is contributing to a significant demand for dog-friendly spaces in Wyndham City, which has been identified in the city’s engagement sessions and Annual Community Survey. The feedback called for greater availability of fenced off-leash areas. According to Councillor Robert Szatkowski, who holds Wyndham’s Climate Futures and Environment Portfolio, there are over 16,700 dog-owning households in Wyndham.
Recognising the role of off-leash facilities in supporting the health of dogs and their owners, Szatkowski said:
“A key outcome of this strategy is to ensure we are providing equitable access to dog off-leash areas for both established and growth areas across the City.”
There are 18 existing off-leash facilities available in Wyndham, and poster printing can be used to increase awareness of community facilities like this. Planning for future facilities will consider the varied needs of the dog breeds most popular in the city, which currently include Labradors, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Jack Russells.
Residents are invited to submit feedback, proposed locations and research for the dog-friendly strategy using the council’s online engagement tool, The Loop, up until Monday, 5 July. Community consultation sessions will also be held from 30 June to 4 July, with details available on the City of Wyndham website.
