Werribee in line for smart crossing

The road outside Heathdale Christian College in Werribee is one of 75 locations in Melbourne earmarked for the installation of innovative new technology to better manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic at street crossings.

The gadgets incorporate sensors and high-definition cameras, which combine to detect pedestrian numbers and adjust crossing times. The target locations for the upgrades are schools near busy intersections and train stations with high pedestrian numbers.

According to Ben Carroll, Roads and Road Safety Minister, the rollout represents a move from programmed crossings to ones that are responsive to real-time data and are designed to preserve pedestrian safety while improving motorist wait times. He added:

"It will make sure that young people and families are crossing safely. But equally families and people getting to work will be spending less time idling in the motor vehicle."

The crossing upgrades are being funded through a Victorian roads package worth an overall $340 million. As part of the programme, school zones will also receive 125 new electronic speed Signs. Printing services can play an important role in communicating information of interest, such as changed traffic conditions, to community constituents through letters and Flyers.

It is anticipated that 20 of the upgraded crossings will be in operation from the second school term this year, with the remaining 55 set to be installed by 2022.
