Werribee health group to mark anniversary

A Werribee health service is celebrating its second birthday with a special party this month.

The Wyndham City Breastfeeding Drop in Centre was established in 2013 and is based in the Sr Rita Douglas Centre in Werribee. The service was set up to help mothers with breastfeeding issues, and to support families as they learn to raise their new babies, and is run under the city’s Maternal and Child Health Service.

The centre was opened after the council identified a need to offer more support to mothers within the community, and has since helped more than 1,000 families.

During the sessions, the service is staffed by experienced lactation consultants as well as maternal nurses. Printing services are also likely to be used to offer leaflets to give parents more information to take home with them as they adapt to their new role.

Wyndham City Council’s portfolio holder for services Councillor Adele Hegedich said the centre had been very successful during its first two years, and highlighted the benefits of offering flexible services within the community.

The centre will mark its birthday with an afternoon tea at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, August 18, which is open to all current and former families who have used the service as well, as anyone who would like to support the centre. The celebration coincides with World Breastfeeding Month, which also takes place in August.
