Winners of a competition that was open to entries from throughout the City of Wyndham, including Werribee, have been announced.
Judges in the photographic Way Out West contest awarded the top prize to the ‘Strength of Melanin Blues’ portrait submitted by Titan Debirioun. The powerful image was set on a blue background and featured a man with African heritage.
Open to 12 to 25 year olds who work, live, socialise or attend school in Wyndham, the competition was run by the Wyndham City Libraries and Youth Services and this year attracted 166 entries.
Among other 2020 winners were Matthew Nugent-McColley, who won the Best Black and White Image with ‘Federation Trail Vibes’, Byron Muir, who took out Best Use of Colour with ‘Uncharted Lights’ and Cameron Borg, who won Best Landscape with ‘Half Way There’.
Mayor of Wyndham, Josh Gilligan, said entries would be exhibited in a different way this year due to COVID-19. Instead of showcasing entries in a special exhibition that also tours, the winning entries will form part of a digital exhibition and a book. Printing services are often enlisted when creating such Books to ensure a high-quality publication that best showcases the photographs.
According to judge Jill Velinos, submissions were of a very high standard. As a tip to budding photographers, she said the art of photography was all about getting the lighting right, and young enthusiasts should keep practising until they master it.
