New name and look for Werribee sports venue

Work on the first stage of the revamp of the former Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre is nearing completion.

The centre is being redeveloped, and when it is finished, the site will house 12 courts being used for a range of indoor sports, including basketball, table tennis and badminton, as well as four outdoor netball courts.

As the completion of the first stage moves closer, Wyndham City Mayor Councillor Peter Maynard has announced the new facility will be called Eagle Stadium.

The name was chosen to represent strength and skill, both traits shown by the native bird. The eagle was also significant to the area’s Aboriginal ancestors from the Kulin nation. Input from the local community was sought when deciding on the new name as well.

The project, which is costing $47m, will also include a café, a creche, a health club and a show court, with seating for around 1,500 people.

The first stage is due for completion in the next few months and the redevelopment is scheduled to be finished by mid-2016. Flyer printing could be used to keep residents up to date as the work progresses, as well as advertising any new clubs or activities that will take place at the stadium.
